Key Competitive Attractions
South-East Romania is the second most attractive location for foreign investment in Romania after Bucharest. The region attracted €2.6 billion in foreign direct investment in 2008. The South-East is home to 2.8 million people, and is composed of six regions – Braila, Buzau, Constanta, Galati, Tulcea and Vrancea. Of these, Constanta and Galati perform the best, accounting for 22 of the 30 most profitable enterprises in the region.
Constanta is located between the Danube and the Black Sea, and is Romania’s largest port. The South East is responsible for 13.3% of Romanian exports and 9.4% of Romanian imports. The area is a major logistical hub for Romania, bordering Moldova and Ukraine, and crossed by Pan-European Transport Corridors no. IV, no. VII and no. IX.
The South-East region is the location of Romania’s only nuclear power facility. The Cernavoda nuclear power station produces 20% of the nation’s total energy output.
South-East Romania has a diversified industrial base which includes food and drink production, wood products, energy and green technologies. Strong links with the European and Asian markets are credited with the success of the region in attracting foreign investment.
