North-West Romania, also called Northern Transylvania covers an area of 34,159 km sq with a population of 2,740,064 people. Just over 50% of the total Hungarian population in Romania lives in the North-West, which has greatly influenced the cultural identity of the region. The major population centres are the cities of Cluj-Napoca, Baia-Mare, Oradea, Zalau, Satau-Mare and Bistrita. There are six counties in the North-West region, Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Cluj, Maramures, Satu-Mare, Salaj.
The primary regional occupation is agriculture, employing approximately 46% of the population. The industrial and services sectors are growing in the region, and foreign investment in the North-West has grown considerably in recent years. Tourism has also experienced rapid growth, thanks to many unique regional attractions including thermal waters, salt mines and the wooden monasteries of Transylvania.

The North-West Regional Development Agency is made up of the presidents of the county councils of the 6 counties in the region. They provide the strategic programme for the region and are responsible for attracting development to the North West.
