Central Romania is composed of six counties – Alba, Brasov, Covasna, Harghita, Mures and Sibiu. Together they are the most ethnically diverse region in Romania, with 65.4% of the population being native Romanians, 29.9% Hungarian, and 4.0% Roma.
Economically, Central Romania is a highly industrialised region with Brasov and Sibiu having particularly strong manufacturing traditions. Natural deposits of natural gas and salt have stimulated the development of the chemicals industry in the region too.
Central Romania has a population of 2,523,021 and covers a total area of 34,100 km sq. The capital city is Brasov, the 8th most populated city in Romania, and one of the most attractive to foreign investors. Approximately 400,000 people live in the greater Brasov metropolitan area, and investment is underway to complete an international airport for the city.
Assistance and Support For New Business Investors
There are two bodies which are concerned with regional development. The Centre Regional Development Agency (ADR) and the Council for Regional Development Centre (CDR).
The ADR deals with consultancy services for inwards investment and the promotion of the region. The CDR administers funding and coordinates regional and national development policies.
