- Excellent transportation links with the Lisbon Metropolitan Area to the south, and the Porto Metropolitan Area to the north.
- Major manufacturing activities concentrated in the littoral area - one of Portugal’s biggest industrial areas.
- Major strengths in higher education, R&D, healthcare, ICT, biotechnology, wood products, agriculture, fishing and tourism.
- Production of automotive parts, food, electrical appliances, machinery, chemicals and paper.
- Among the best wine areas in Portugal - Dao DOC and Bairrada DOC.
- Numerous major industry and commerce centres: Coimbra, Aviero, Viseu. Leiria, Covilha, Castelo Branco, and Figueira da Foz.
