The Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship is known as the land of a thousand lakes. In actuality, there are almost two thousand lakes in the region, and in addition to such natural beauty, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship has attracted a large amount of foreign investment.
In total, 1,427,091 people live in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The capital is Olsztyn, which acts as the major economic driver of the region. Unemployment has remained consistently below the Polish national average for years, and the region offers a balance of natural beauty and industrial success.
The Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship is home to a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which is home to companies like Agrochem Ltd, Orion+ ltd, Michelin, and LG Electronics. The region also houses the Elblag Technology Centre, an initiative developed for 2007-2013 in order to encourage hi-tech investments. The natural resources of the region include its lakes and woodland. Almost half the surface area is protected land, which attracts many tourists. The Luknajno Lake nature reserve is a protected wetland and a UNESCO designated biosphere reserve. Wood products are also an important export, however, with IKEA and Scheider exploiting high-quality local timber.
