The Podlaskie Voivodeship occupies the north-eastern part of Poland, bordering the Polish regions of Warmian-Masurian, Masovian and Lublin, as well as Lithuania and Belarus.
Podlaskie is a member of the Interborder Union Euroregion Niemen, involving Poland, Lithuania and Belarus, facilitating cooperation with the Baltic countries as well as the regions of Trento, Lombardy, Bolzano, Burgundy, Hame, North Rhine-Westphalia and Varmland.
Podlaskie’s capital, Bialystok, is the largest industrial, cultural and scientific centre in the region, where the majority of cultural and educational institutions are concentrated.
The Podlaskie economy is largely agriculture-based, with 46.2% of jobs related to food and drink production. The main products are meat, fruit and vegetables, beer, spirits and milk. Podlaskie is known for its manufacturers of milk products, which are the largest and most modern in Poland and exported to Western European markets.
The timber production and wood products sector is also important to the Podlaskie economy, accounting for 14.6% of output. Plastic and rubber manufacturing, and machinery and equipment are also significant sectors.
The Podlaskie Voivodeship was included in the Green Lungs of Poland eco-region, a sustainable development project.
