The Lublin region is an important scientific and cultural centre in Poland, offering a balance of tradition and modern life, with thriving knowledge-based sectors, a vibrant tourism industry and excellent educational institutions.
At the end of 2010, the region was home to 164,076 enterprises, an increase of 5.1% on the previous year. The biggest sectors can be identified by the categories the businesses are registered as:

- Construction - 19,235 businesses
- Manufacturing - 13,166 businesses
- Professional, scientific and technical - 11,789 businesses
Lublin has great potential, and necessary infrastructure in place, to become a major scientific research centre. Almost half of the 350,000-strong population consists of students. The region hosts fourteen universities and colleges, including the Lublin University of Technology, the Catholic University of Lublin, Maria Sklodowska-Curie University (UMCS), the Agricultural University of Lublin, the Medical University of Lublin and the European Ph.D. College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities.
This cluster offers excellent opportunities in technology transfer, and facilitates collaboration with the business community. Additionally, the number of research centres conducting work for the advancement of industry is growing.
