Telemark is situated in the south east of Norway, home to approximatly 500 companies, and one of Norway’s top industrial counties. Its administrative centre is Skien, considered by to be Norway’s 7th biggest city, (Statistics Norway, 2009).
Telemark’s major sectors include the traditional industries of wood products, agriculture and metals, as well as emerging high-tech industries, such as biotechnology, ICT and renewable energy.
Telemark represents an excellent standard of education, home to the Telemark University College, the BI Norwegian School of Management, and numerous well-reputed research institutions, including Heroya Research Park, Telemarkforsking, and Tel-Tek.
Due to the concentration of research facilities and companies, Telemark enjoys a flourishing biotechnology research cluster, complemented by the new innovation centre for natural gas.
Telemark also offers a varied cultural environment, with numerous theatres, concerts and festivals, providing a high quality of life and much lower costs than Oslo, whilst being situated within a two-hour drive of the capital.
