Sor-Trondelag County occupies a strategic position between the Norwegian Sea, and Sweden, with the Trondheimsfjord running through the middle. The administrative centre of the region is Trondheim, Norway’s 3rd most populated municipality, and 4th largest city.
Fishing and farming have long been important industries in Sor-Trondelag. The city of Trondheim is the administrative and industrial centre of the region, with varied activities from agricultural production, to high-tech industries and healthcare.
Trondheim’s major employers include the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), SINTEF (Scandinavia's largest independent research organisation), St. Olavs University Hospital, and a cluster of other technology related institutions.
Trondheim is also known for being the home of The Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy at Kuhaugen, and a well-developed media and creative industries cluster. Adresseavisen is the oldest newspaper still in operation in Norway, (established in 1767,) and the company also owns the regional television channel and radio station. In addition, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) has chosen to set up one of its headquarters in Trondheim, (the other is in the capital, Oslo). The student community also runs a paper, radio station online TV broadcasts, providing a constant stream of skilled labour in the media sector.
