Oppland has been an industrial region for many decades, with many small and large industrial companies established in the area.
Oppland County’s administrative and commerce centre is Lillehammer, the gateway for the Gudbrandsdal, which is crossed by the highway to Trondheim.
The county has a population of 183,637 and is divided onto 26 municipalities. The main towns are Gjovik and Lillehammer. The county is also home to Norway’s highest mountain, Galdhopiggen, and Norway’s largest lake, Mjosa, and the mountainous parts of the county are popular among skiers and hikers, which, combined with five national parks, make the Oppland region a popular tourist destination.
One of the county’s main assets is its rich soil and excellent access to water, which provide an ideal climate for agricultural industries. In addition, good transport connections and potential for land development provide a promising environment for food and drink production industries.
Lillehammer was the official host city of the 1994 Winter Olympics, which resulted in significant improvements to the city’s infrastructure and tourism industry. The construction of new roads, and improvement to existing ones has created great potential for further development in the area.
