Nord-Trondelag County is the sixth largest and fourth least populated county in Norway, covering 22,412 square kilometres, and with a population 131,555 inhabitants in 2010.
The economy is mainly supported by the services sector, agriculture, fisheries, hydro-electricity and forestry. Innherred is the most populous area, along the west side of the Trondheimsfjord.
Agriculture is the main sector of the economy, particularly in Indre Namdal and Naeroy. A total of 876 square kilometres is used for agricultural production, (310 square kilometres of which are used for cereals), and 10% of Norway’s agricultural output is produced in Nord-Trondelag.
Fishing is particularly important in Ytre Namdal. Trondheimsfjorden has the highest output of any fjord in Norway. Salmon farming has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with most exports going to Continental Europe and the Far East.
With approximately 40% of the county covered by forests, wood production is an integral industry in Nord-Trondelag, producing approximately 800,000 cubic meters of lumber annually.
