More og Romsdal County Council
Key Competitive Attractions
More og Romsdal County occupies the northernmost part of western Norway. Its administrative centre is Molde, but the largest city, and main industrial centre is Alesund.
The main industries of the region are wood products (mainly furniture), shipping and maritime, offshore oil exploration and production, tourism, agriculture and food and drink.
The ship-building, repairs and equipment industry in the region has expanded over the years, and despite there being no shipping yards in Alesund, shipyards continue to operate successfully in the surrounding communities, home to companies including STX Europe, Havyard Group, Kleven Maritime, and Ulstein Verft.
Since the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970’s, local fishing fleet ship owners have capitalised on the opportunity to rebuild vessels to serve the oil exploration and production industry. Today, these businesses have evolved to build offshore vessels especially designed to serve the North Sea oil industry, and have gained great recognition for their expertise. Major ship-building companies in the area include Rem, Farstad, Havila, Olympic, and Bourbon. In turn, a cluster of equipment manufacturers has emerged: Odim, Sperre, Optimar, Ship Equip, Jets.
