Podgorica is the capital city of Montenegro, and the largest municipality by population in the country. Approximately 190,000 people live in Podgorica, equivalent to almost 1/3 of the country’s total population.
In recent years, the region has shifted away from heavy industries towards telecommunications, construction and banking. The city is home to the Montenegro Stock Exchange, and the majority of Montenegrin banks. Podgorica is also where the nation’s main international airport is situated.
The process of privatisation has been completed in Podgorica, and the majority of the formally public-owned factories have continued production, including the Podgorica aluminium smelter and AD Plantaze.
