Pljevlja is located in the north of Montenegro, with a population of 35,806 people, spread across 153 settlements in 1,346 km sq. The majority of the population is centred on the town of Pljevlja. The ethnic makeup of the region is very diverse, with 59% being Serbian, 20% Montenegrin, 6% Bosnian and the rest other.
Pljevlja produces all of Montenegro’s coal export, and 45% of the energy of the country from Montenegro’s only thermal power plant.
Pljevlja also has the most highly active lumber industry in Montenegro, and these industries have brought a comparatively high standard of living to the area.
