Independent since 2008, the government of Kosovo has made the attraction of foreign direct investment a key priority. There are just over two million people in Kosovo, and just fewer than 90,000 small and medium sized enterprises, most of which are engaged in trade.
Kosovo has a highly import-based economy; in 2008, exports reached 195.9 million Euros, compared to 1.9 billion Euros in imports. Investment is underway in the various natural resources of the region in order to try and boost the strength of local markets. Mining, textiles, metals and agriculture are growing industries alongside financial services, information technology, advanced manufacturing and tourism.
Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe with 70% of its citizens under the age of 35. The country is multilingual, with the two official languages being Serbian and Albanian, and English and German being widely spoken.
