Westland is one of the eight main regions of Iceland, located at the west side of the island. The largest town is Akranes, with a population of just over 6,000 people.
As in many areas of Iceland, the fishing industry remains the region`s most important source of employment, but commerce has also become significant for Akranes, as it is the service centre for the large rural region surrounding it.
The region is expected to grow further in the coming years because of growing industry and better transportation to the Reykjavik area. In 1998, the Hvalfjorour Tunnel was opened in the area, and is one of the world`s longest underwater road tunnels with 5.57km.
