The Western Fjords is the name for the large peninsula in north-western Iceland. The area benefits from good natural harbours in many of the fjords, and closeness to fishing areas, which are vital for the local economy. The Western Fjords are sparsely populated with a total of just over 7,000 inhabitants. The capital is Isafjorour, which serves as a centre for commerce, administration and transportation in the region.
