The Northern Hungary regional economy has experienced significant growth and diversification in recent years, particularly in its export activities. The three highest producing areas are Eger, generating 48% of total output, and Gyongyos and Hatvan, generating a combined 40% of the region’s output.
Traditional mining industries have declined in the last decade, and Northern Hungary has seen a shift in its economic structure, with the manufacturing industry becoming the dominant sectors – particularly in machinery, metal production, wood products, food and drink production, and textiles.
The Northern Hungary region is home to Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County, the second largest and most densely populated county in Hungary, bordering Slovakia and the river Tisza. The county’s industrial and logistics centre is the city of Miskolc, at the base of the Bukk mountains.
Northern Hungary is home to two massive chemicals companies – BorsodChem and TVK, and the emergence of modern sectors is represented by a presence of multinational companies producing modern goods in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County. Numerous SME’s are also growing rapidly within the region, significantly altering the economic structure of the area, and lowering the unemployment rate by creating new jobs.
