The Northern Great Plain region shares border with the Ukraine and Romania, providing excellent access to eastern and EU markets.
The region’s administrative and industrial centre is its capital of Debrecen, Hungary's second biggest city, and a notable university town.
Budapest Ferihegy International Airport can be reached from Szolnok within 90 minutes by car, and Nyiregyhaza enjoys excellent connections to Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania.
The Northern Great Plain region is traditionally known for its agricultural, food and machine related industries, as well as the health and tourism industries. The region is well known for its spas, health resorts, clinics and medical universities, which are projected to attract more companies in biotechnology, organic food and herbal products in the near future. Natural springs and mineral water supply a number of brands of mineral water, which have won awards at the Paris AquaExpo.
There are 100,000 businesses operating in the Northern Great Plain region, benefitting significantly from skilled, available human resources, thanks to an excellent system of secondary, vocational and higher educational institutions.

The Eszak-Alfold Regional Development Council acts as the regional coordinator of economic development. The Council acts through Eszak-Alfold Regional Development Agency (EARFU), its work organisation, whose main aim is to create a competitive and innovative economy developed, with available, skilled and dynamic human resources.
