Key Competitive Attractions
Trikala is a sub-region of the Thessaly Region of Greece, which also contains the town of Kalampaka and the Monasteries of Meteora – Greece’s second largest monastery complex, making religious tourism a notable contributor to the economy.
Trikala’s main industry, however, is agriculture. The area is known for its cattle farming and production of fruit and vegetables, cotton, and olives amongst other produce. The Thessaly Region is a rich agricultural area, thanks to alluvial soils in the Pineios Basin and its tributaries. It is Greece’s leading cattle rearing area. The cultivation of dried nuts has increased in recent years, including almonds, pistachios and walnuts. Goods can be exported via the Port of Volos, just a 2-hour drive away (see Communications).
Assistance and Support For New Business Investors
The Trikala Development Agency implements national and EU programmes, and offers support to investors and local companies. The agency also provides information about the local economy, and helps provide vocational training and education to employees.
