Lesbos is the third largest island in Greece. It is located in the north Aegean, separated only be a narrow strait to mainland Turkey. The island has a population of approximately 90,000, about a third of which live in the capital, Mytilene.
The economy is based on agriculture and tourism. The most important export item is olive oil. Fish, soap, cheese, pottery and ouzo (the Greek national liqueur) are also important sources of income. The island is home to several ancient and medieval sights, traditional villages and beaches. The tourism sector is also helped by the presence of an international airport.
