The Heraklion regional unit incorporates the former municipalities of Gorgolainis, Heraklion, Nea Alikarnassos, Paliani, and Temenos. Heraklion is the biggest city in Crete, and fourth biggest city in Greece.
The Heraklion economy is diverse, with strengths in the creative, high-tech and scientific industries and international tourism. The University of Crete and the Technical Educational Institute of Crete are located in Heraklion, as are seven research institutes (see Universities & Research). There are four local TV stations (Channel 4, Creta Channel, Kriti TV, and MyTV), 40 radio stations, and wide range of creative
businesses.
Heraklion is also well served by the Heraklion International Airport and Heraklion shipping and ferry port. Crete is a major tourist holiday destination, making Heraklion Greece’s second busiest airport.
