Kiel is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the Baltic Sea and the Kiel Canal. It is Germany’s northernmost large city, and with a population of 238,000, also the state's most populous.
The city is known for hosting Kiel Week, the world’s largest annual sailing event. Since 2005, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy is awarding a Global Economy Prize.
Kiel's economy is dominated by marine & shipbuilding industries, transport and logistics, as well as the service sector. It is one of the German Navy's main ports and a leading German high-tech military, submarine and civil shipbuilding centre. HDW Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft in Kiel built the Brandtaucher, Germany's first submarine, in 1850 and today subsidises Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems.
