Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost German region, bordering Denmark to the north and the city of Hamburg to the south. It is called the “land between the seas” due to its location right between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The region’s capital is Kiel; other notable cities are Lubeck, Flensburg and Neumunster.
The A1 motorway takes you from the second largest city of Lubeck to Hamburg in less than an hour, while the A20, which is still being developed, connects Schleswig-Holstein with neighbouring region Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Both Kiel and Lubeck have airports, with several low-cost airlines flying to and from Lubeck International Airport every day. The Kiel Canal, connecting North Sea and Baltic Sea, is a major shipping route.
Schleswig-Holstein is the German region with the lowest business tax. Other business advantages include the combination of high productivity and low labour costs as well as a wide availability of commercial property at relatively low cost.
A key infrastructure development in the region is the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link. It is proposed to connect Schleswig-Holstein’s offshore island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea with the Danish island of Lolland, providing a direct link by railroad and highway between northern Germany and Scandinavia. It is expected to be completed in 2018.
Schleswig-Holstein’s key sectors are:

- Medical technology
- ICT
