Wuppertal is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Wupper River south of the Ruhr area. The population of Wuppertal is about 350,000.
Two thirds of the total municipal area is green belt: woods, meadows, gardens and fields. Wuppertal’s key business sectors are textiles, metallurgy, chemicals, medicine (Bayer), tool manufacturing, electric, rubber, vehicles and printing equipment. One of the best known pain killer medications, Aspirin, was invented in Wuppertal by Bayer.
The Wuppertal monorail is known as the town’s landmark and has replaced conventional trams in the city. It has been in operation since 1901.
