Hagen is the located on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area in North-Rhine Westphalia, 15 km south of Dortmund. It has a population of about 197,000.
Hagen is home to the FernUniversität Hagen, the only state funded distance education university in Germany. With more than 67,000 students it is Germany's largest university.
Economically, Hagen is home to a larger number of small and medium sized metal and metallurgy manufacturing companies, as well as to many businesses in the service sector. Well-known companies based in Hagen include Douglas Holding (perfume and consumer goods), Christ (jewellery), SinnLeffers (textiles) and Brandt (Germany's best known producer of rusk).
