Essen is located in the central part of the Ruhr region in North Rhine-Westphalia, directly on the Ruhr river. With a population of about 600,000, Essen is Germany's 9th largest city, and became the European Capital of Culture in 2010.
Historically known as one of Germany's most important coal and steel centres, Essen has developed a strong tertiary sector.
