Key Competitive Attractions
Bottrop is located on the Rhine-Herne Canal, in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia. It adjoins Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck and Dorsten.
Historically, Bottrop is a coal mining and rail centre and home to factories producing coal-tar derivatives, chemicals, textiles, and machinery. It is one of the few cities within the Ruhr region that still has an active coalmine. Other key sectors include logistics, professional services, publishing, automotive, chemicals and consumer goods manufacturing. Bottrop's economic structure is diverse and mainly made up of SMEs, with one in two people working in the service sector industry.
Bottrop has Germany's longest stretch of motorway without junctions, which is often used for testing vehicles at high speed, and is home to the famous Mercedes-Benz tuning company Brabus.
