North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), often shortened to NRW, is located in the western central part of Germany, bordering Belgium and the Netherlands as well as the German regions of Hessen, Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate. North Rhine-Westphalia is the most populous and the most densely populated of all German regions. The capital is Dusseldorf; other larger cities include Cologne, Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg. The Ruhr region is Germany’s largest metropolitan area with about 5, 2 million inhabitants.
In 2009, North Rhine-Westphalia contributed 21.7% (521.7 billion Euro) to Germany’s GDP, which by far the largest contribution of all German regions.
