Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the sixth largest German state by area, and the least densely populated one. The region is one of Germany’s leading tourist destinations due to its Baltic Sea coastline, islands such as Usedom and Rügen as well as the Mecklenburg Lake District. Three of Germany's fourteen national parks are in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in addition to several hundred nature conservation areas. The Universities of Rostock and Greifswald, founded in the 14th century, are amongst the oldest in Europe.
