Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) is a centrally located region in Germany, bordering Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein to the north, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt to the east, Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia to the south and the Netherlands to the west. The region is the second largest in Germany in regards to geographical size and with around 8 million inhabitants the fourth most populated region. The capital is Hannover.
The communications infrastructure in Lower Saxony is equally well distributed between road and rail networks as well as the region’s ports. The key road axes running through Lower Saxony connect Scandinavia and Italy on the north-south axis and London, Paris and Amsterdam with Berlin, Warsaw and Moscow on the east-west axis. Lower Saxony has a number of well-connected passenger and freight ports, notably Wilhelmshaven. The harbour city state of Bremen is also located geographically within Lower Saxony’s borders. Hannover International Airport serves over 100 destinations every day, including a growing number of destinations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Hannover is also the best-known German location for large trade fairs, including the CeBit and Hannover Messe as well as the Agritechnica, the Biotechnica or the IAA for Commercial Vehicles. In 2009, 66 trade fairs and exhibitions featured 23,000 exhibitors and more than 2 million visitors.
