Lower Saxony is centrally located in Germany, bordering Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Hessen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Netherlands. Lower Saxony is the second largest region in Germany, geographically, and the fourth most densely populated region, with approximately 8 million inhabitants. The capital is Hannover.
The region boasts excellent road and rail communications networks, as well as enjoying healthy port activity. The key road axes running through Lower Saxony connect Scandinavia and Italy on the north-south axis, and London, Paris and Amsterdam with Berlin, Warsaw and Moscow on the east-west axis. Lower Saxony has a number of well-connected passenger and freight ports, notably Wilhelmshaven. The harbour city state of Bremen is also located geographically within Lower Saxony’s borders. Hannover International Airport serves over 100 destinations every day, including a growing number of destinations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
