The German state of Bavaria, located in the southeast of Germany, is by far the largest German state by area, forming almost 20% of the total land area of the country, and is Germany's second most populous state after North Rhine Westphalia with almost 12.5 million inhabitants. It borders Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, as well as the German states of Baden-Wurttemberg, Hessen, Thuringia and Saxony, and its capital is Munich.
