Loire is home to the multidisciplinary Jean-Monnet University in Saint-Etienne, founded in 1969 and with a current total of 14,000 students.

Research
There are around 1200 researchers, professors and PhD students working in 40 laboratories in Loire, and a hundred companies have a research and development team (total of 900 researchers).

- Minalogic: innovations and skills centre specialising in creation, finalisation and production of goods and services based on intelligent miniaturised industrial solutions.
- Lyon Urban Truck & Bus: cluster involved in research for the improvement of the public transport systems.
