The Gard has successfully transformed itself into the most industrial department of the Languedoc-Roussillon. Centres of excellence and competitiveness clusters have developed in:
- Nuclear, Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Energy research in the Rhone Gard
- Biotechnology in Nîmes
- Biosafety at the School of Mines in Ales
- Mediterranean Agriculture and Food in the Cevennes and the coastal plain.
Agriculture predominates the Gard economy with 7,500 farms occupying 6% of the department's total employment, (double the national average). The sectors of Tourism, Transport, and Human Services, account for 73.9% of jobs.
Gard creates more jobs than the average French departments, enjoying a rise of 0.9% per year on average - three times the national average of 0.3%.
