The economic base consists primarily of small-scale establishments, relatively well distributed throughout the territory.
The department has about fifty large institutions, distributed along the RN 88 and RN 102 roads. Two thirds of the work carried out by these great institutions are in the fields of:

- Metalworking
- Food processing
- Textiles
Close to major cities such as Clermont-Ferrand, Saint-Etienne and Lyon, the department of Haute-Loire has assets conducive to a balanced economy and local industry.
