For centuries, Turku was the largest city in Finland. Though eclipsed by Helsinki for the last two hundred years, Turku still remains one of the country’s most significant urban centres.
Strategically located, with easy access to both Scandinavia and Russia, Turku is an important regional logistics centre. Other vital business sectors include shipbuilding (in particular construction of high- tech luxury cruise ships), ICT, functional foods and pharmaceuticals. The biggest employer in the region is Nokia. Other international companies include STX Europe (cruise shipbuilding), If (insurance) and PerkinElmer (life sciences).
There are two universities and four universities of applied sciences, two of which are Swedish-language institutions. The total number of students is 45,000.
