Key Competitive Attractions
Satakunta is the oldest historical province in Finland, with a population of 227,000 people, in an area of 8,412 km sq, including two of the country’s most important ports in the cities of Pori and Rauma.
Tourism in the region is very important, with fine sandy beaches in Pori, and international standard music festivals. There are also two UNESCO world heritage sites in Satakunta:
- Old Rauma, famous for its ornate wooden houses and idyllic streets
- Sammallahdenmaki - Bronze Age burial cairns
Pori has a strong history of industry, and is now a centre for the creation of magnetic materials, solar cells, and superconductors. Rauma is undergoing rapid development as the site of Finland's largest industrial project, the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant.
