The second largest region in Finland by population, Pirkanmaa is home to 477,000 people. Also called the Tampere region, it encompasses 14,469 km sq, and is home to some of the largest companies operating in Finland.
Approximately 1/3 of the economy is in manufacturing and construction, with the majority of manufacturing industries geared towards export. Market leaders in machinery and automation are based in Pirkanmaa.
Pirkanmaa is second only to Helsinki in terms of research and development, and 13-15% of public and private sector national R&D funding is allocated to the region also. Nokia has a major R&D facility in the region, and the Centre of Expertise programme promotes the growing reputation of Pirkanmaa as a region with a stake in the development of tomorrow’s technology.
Tourism throughout the region is varied, with beautiful countryside united with some of the largest urban centres in Finland.
