Regional Council of Paijat-Hame (Paijanne Tavastia)
Key Competitive Attractions
The region of Paijanne Tavastia, also known as Paijat-Hame, is a historical and culturally rich region dominated by lush forests and unspoiled lakes. Its administrative centre is the city of Lahti, located just 100 km north of Helsinki. The region has a population of 200,000 people, and covers a total of 6,259 km sq. The region is an important source of drinking water for the entire southern region.
Paijanne Tavastia is best known for its tourism, but it also has a strong industrial base. Traditional industries of agriculture and forestry are the main activities in the rural parts, whilst commercial manufacturing of wood and plastic products constitute the main sectors of the urban areas.
The Lahti city region benefits from a world-class research and business centre, and a Cleantech environmental research cluster. With a prime location close to southern Finland and Russia, businesses are well placed to capitalise on these growing markets with a location that is cheaper than both.
