Northern Savonia is home to 249,000 people in an area of 20,366 km sq. The majority of the local economy is based around the forest, which accounts for 83% of the land in the region. Tourism is a growth industry in the region, with 28,000 holiday homes and between 300 and 400 more built annually. The picturesque countryside is a major asset to Northern Savonia, and environmental legislation has been put in place in order to protect it.
Kuopio is the region’s largest city, with a population of 96,830. This is a city with a long history of education, dating back to some of the first schools to teach Finnish in the country. Currently, Kuopio has the largest yearly intake of medical students in Finland. Over 20% of the jobs in Kuopio stem from the health and social care services sector, with finance and services to business accounting for another 18%.
