Saare County
Key Competitive Attractions
The Saare region is composed of Estonia's largest island - Saaremaa – and a number of smaller islands around it, with a total population of 34,723 people (2009).
Key Investment Opportunities:
- Thanks to the quality of the water on the island, there are excellent investment opportunities in crayfish breeding, and similar food production related industries.
- There is great potential for wind energy and other types of renewable energy.
- With thirty-two swamps in the county, exceeding ten ha, there are plentiful opportunities in the extraction of Peat and related activities.
- Wood production offers great potential for development, with 131,000 hectares of forests, and 15 million cubed metres of timber resources. The yearly felling volume is 250,000 cubed metres, with most timber being exported to Finland and Sweden as pulpwood. The infrastructure of roads and drainage systems are of a high standard, making the forests easily accessed.
- The island is home to several production complexes in good condition, ready for investment. The complexes were used for agricultural purposes, but could easily be installed with modern technologies and equipment.
- The region is rich in natural resources, including limestone, dolomite, curative mud, peat, gravel, sand and ceramic clay, making it ideal for activities in construction materials.
