Sillamae is a town in Ida-Viru County, Estonia. It has a population of 16,183 and covers an area of 10.54 km sq.
Sillamae was a closed town under the Soviet regime, which meant that travel and residency were highly restricted. This is because Sillamae was used primarily for the manufacture and processing of uranium for Soviet nuclear power stations and weaponry. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Sillamae has diversified, and is currently the home of the Silmet group. Silmet produce tantalum, rare-earth metals, and were the first group to mine niobium, which is used in jets, gas pipelines and superconductive materials.
Sillamae’s port is the easternmost port in the EU, located just 25 km from the Russian border.
