Key Competitive Attractions
Ida-Viru County’s main credits include a long tradition in industrial activities, and its huge number of large production facilities and chains.
The Ida-Viru economy is characterised mainly by its oil shale production and power engineering complex, with 16% of Estonia’s production output generated in the Ida-Viru region, and the highest concentration of industrial and power engineering companies located here. Other key industries include textiles, oil shale chemistry, wood products, construction materials and metals.
The area has healthy local tourism, with numerous hotels, restaurants, and resorts, but there is still much potential here for development, and to tap into an international tourist market. Foreign tourism will be significantly increased by the establishment of a ferry route between Sillamae and Kotka.
