Odense is the third largest city in Denmark, with a population of over 187,000 people (2009) consisting of over 16,000 students and 150 different nationalities.
Several large industries are located in or near Odense. Denmark’s largest shipyard, Odense Steel Shipyard, is in the neighbouring town of Munkebo.
Odense is the commercial hub of Funen, serving the surrounding cities with its retail businesses in the city centre’s shopping district. The Rosengardcentret shopping mall is located in the southeastern part of Odense, which is one of the largest in Denmark with 100,000 sq m of commercial space, and 153 stores.
The city's central location in Denmark makes it one of the key national convention and congress centres.
