Key Competitive Attractions
With a population of approximately 625,000 and an area of 10,056 km sq, South Bohemia is the most sparsely populated region in the Czech Republic, with just 62 people for every 1 sq km. South Bohemia is responsible for 5.4% of the GDP, and, in terms of GDP per capita, rates fourth in the Czech Republic, after Prague, Pilsen and South Moravia.
South Bohemia contributes 11% of the Czech Republic’s agricultural production, and half of the region’s fish production. Industrial production is centred primarily on the Ceske Budejovice urban agglomeration, main products being food, transport equipment, machinery and textiles. South Bohemia is also a major source of employment for the construction industry, accounting for 4.4% of total construction output in the country.
The region is home to the controversial Temelin nuclear power plant, which has been in operation since 2002, and is the largest power source in the country. South Bohemia also has one of the highest proportions of people in the country with higher education qualification, only outdone by Prague, South Moravia and Olomouc.
