Pilsen is in the southwest of the Czech Republic, home to the fourth most populous city in the country, and has the fifth highest GDP/person ratio.

Pilsen is home to 550,000 people, one third of which live in the capital city, also called Pilsen. Pilsen city is famous worldwide as the home of Pilsener beer, and was nominated for European Capital of Culture 2015. The city itself is responsible for roughly two thirds of the revenue of the region, despite being home to one third of the population. The Pilsen region is home to 5.4% of the national population, and generates 5.5% of its revenue, but the city is an extremely efficient economic centre.

Food processing, building materials, ceramics and mechanical engineering are the most significant industries in the region. Foreign capital is currently at more than twice the national average, accounting for 3.4% of the industrial businesses in the region.
