The Blagoevgrad region occupies a strategic geographical position on the E79 international motorway, just 100 km south of the capital, Sofia, 25 km from the Macedonian border; 100 km from the border of Greece, and only 200 km from Thessaloniki Port.
Blagoevgrad is known in Bulgaria for its good schools and educational system. There are several specialised science schools, language schools and technical schools churning out a well-skilled and educated pool of human resources each year. In addition, Blagoevgrad has two universities: Neofit Rilski Southwestern University and the American University in Bulgaria.
The economy of Blagoevgrad is mainly characterised by the textiles, construction and service industries. Due to the large volumes of, its excellent geographical location, and infrastructure, the region prospers.
