ABA - Invest in Austria - Universities & Research
There is a hug link between education and economic success in Austria and, so, the country focuses on providing excellent education and training at all levels. To ensure the educational system meets the requirements of the business community Austria offers a dual education system. The education provided usually equals that of a Bachelor’s Degree qualification. Once graduated, the students can start their professional careers or continue being educated by studying at one of the 20 universities of applied sciences, 22 public universities and 13 private ones.
Universities of applied sciences offer about 482 different courses of study and are tailored to the specific needs of companies. Many companies, such as Philips or Siemens, offer internships or R&D projects and industrial managers sometimes give lectures and provide students with first-hand knowledge.
According to the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2010, Austria’s educational system is among the top ten – ahead of France, Germany, Japan and Great Britain. Annually, there are about 2,000 projects targeting corporate research and more than 1,000 non-university research facilities and numerous R&D headquarters.
A number of Austrian educational institutions offer training programmes in Eastern Europe, such as the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration.
Austrian universities specialise in the fields of environmental technology, ICT, medical engineering, life sciences and biotechnology as the European country boasts a longstanding tradition in the science industry. The country’s education system adds to the high quality of life in Austria and the universities have emerged as vital forces that drive the country to continually remain as one of Europe’s most attractive and appealing research and technology locations.
