Venezuela has the fifth largest oil reserves and seventh largest natural gas reserves in the world. The country is also rich in minerals such as iron, bauxite, coal, gold and diamonds, and is a major exporter of chemicals.
Besides extraction of natural resources, foreign direct investment has been directed towards manufacturing, telecommunications and banking. The main sources of investment have been the United States, Japan, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Colombia.
In the case of tourism, Venezuela boasts a stunning array of natural sites: the highest waterfall in the world (Angel Falls), the largest lake in South America (Maracaibo) and the third largest river in the world (Orinoco).
Venezuela is a member of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI). The country is also applying for membership in MERCOSUR. Venezuela’s main trading partners are the United States, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil.
